Andrew Weathers

 

Andrew Weathers (b.1988) is a composer and improviser originally from Chapel Hill, NC currently based in Littlefield, TX. His music engages with notions of place, tradition, repetition, and spirit, taking cues from folk, experimental, and punk lineages. He studied composition at UNC-Greensboro and electronic music at Mills College in Oakland, CA. His work is focused on world-building, using art as a vehicle to create the world we want from what we have Weathers primarily performs and records solo and heads up the utopic chamber-folk group Andrew Weathers Ensemble. He also works regularly with Tethers, Real Life Rock & Roll Band, Satin Spar, and Common Eider, King Eider, among others. Over the past decade of intense activity, Weathers has collaborated or studied with numerous figures of experimental music including Pauline Oliveros, Fred Frith, Roscoe Mitchell, Tatsuya Nakatani, Eugene Chadbourne and many others.

In addition to maintaining a busy performance and recording schedule, Weathers helps run Full Spectrum Records, a boutique label founded in 2008 focusing on limited editions of interesting work from the underground. He is also a producer at Other Minds Records in San Francisco, working to release new and archival works by luminaries of New Music. Weathers additionally works as a freelance mixing and mastering engineer out of his West Texas studio, Ordinary Dude Recording Services and is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World.

Amenta Abioto

Amenta Abioto is a singer, songwriter, producer from Memphis, TN. In her one-woman performance, she builds vocal and instrumental loops from kalimba, synthesizer, drum machine, and guitar creating atmospheric textures. Weaved into syncopated rhythms and dichotomies of comedic proportions, Amenta surprises and tantalizes audiences with mind-bending ideas while skipping vocally from soul-shaking gospel to smooth jazz. Amenta studied drama and was familiarized with the stage through theater by experimenting and playing various characters. With an instilled drama mind, Amenta moved to Portland, OR in 2010 with her family (mother & 4 sisters). There she began her musical chapter and merged drama with her music. After playing music with musicians and forming one band, dopebeds, Her solo project made debut in a dark, warm basement in Spring of 2012. Since then, Amenta has released three projects and toured with The Blow, Secret Drum Band, Typhoon, and The Ghost Ease. In 2019 she plans to release her third record. Her music is boldly mystical and soul-fired, and her raw live performances invoke elements of both theatrical surprise and magic through ancient African diasporic sounds and stories.

Mystical Joyride is an LA based hubby and wifey “cosmic duo”, making psychedelic pop music to shake your hips and ride the mystery to.  Officially formed in 2017, Mystical Joyride became an outlet for the existential questions of their lead singer Leah, joined with the wizardy beats and productions or her husband, Joel.  After playing their first show in Mexico at the International Dance Party “Conducto,” they have focused on making powerful music that will make you move to the rhythms while pondering the depths of the universe.  Their debut EP “Enter From The Inside” is available everywhere online, and their next EP “Conducto” is almost done!

Lyla June

Lyla June is a nationally and internationally renowned public speaker, poet, hip-hop artist and acoustic singer-songwriter of Diné (Navajo) and Tsétsêhéstâhese (Cheyenne) lineages. Her music and message centers around intergenerational and inter-ethnic healing, as well as an articulation of Indigenous Philosophy. Her life story of addiction, abuse, discrimination and eventually overcoming these battles gives her a powerful vantage point from which to share a message of love, unification and healing. Lyla’s urgent, vibrant stage presence and ability to convey paths forward for indigenous liberation have brought her to universities, school assemblies, conferences, music festivals, and community centers across the United States and over ten nations around the world.

She is a co-founder of The Taos Peace and Reconciliation Council, which works to heal intergenerational trauma and ethnic division in the northern New Mexico. She is a walker within the Nihigaal Bee Iiná Movement, a 1,000-mile prayer walk through Diné Tah (the Navajo homeland) that is exposing the exploitation of Diné land and people by uranium, coal, oil and gas industries. She is the lead organizer of the Black Hill Unity Concert which gathers native and nonnative musicians to pray for the return of guardianship of the Black Hills to the Lakota, Nakota and Dakota nations. She is the also the founder of Regeneration Festival, an annual celebration of children that occurs in 13 countries around the world every September.

In 2012, she graduated with honors from Stanford University with a degree in Environmental Anthropology. She is also an alumna from the University of New Mexico where she graduated with a master’s degree in American Indian Education with distinction.

In the Beginning — The 1950s. How is it that I wrote the first gay country album in 1973? The answer is short… my dad said I could. My dad, a dairy farmer with ten kids, in redneck land in 1955, in his dung spattered brown overalls and clodhopper boots; that dad said I could. He helped me weave a blond bailing twine wig, put up with Tinker Bell outfits, and drove me in full drag to talent shows when I was 13. Over and over again in a hundred different ways, he told me not to sneak; he said it would ruin my immortal soul. Yes, that dad, who never laid a hand to me, pointed out the way so adroitly with the grace of a ballerina. I never knew he was the Saint of Dry Creek in a sea of racism, sexism and homophobia. All I knew was he was a dad who loved his kid.

After Stonewall — The 1970s

Lavender Country was a community effort for sure. By us, from us, for us; the Stonewall Rebellion crowd. Seattle’s out of the closet LGBTQ folks were on the move, doing all manner of bold, creative projects in 1973. Lavender Country was one of them. The community raised the money for the studio, promoted and distributed the bootleg album through a post office box and came to our shows… and yes, I wrote and sang the songs, except for Eve’s song.

We knew gay country was absurd for mass distribution, and that was our saving grace. It allowed us to pour our hurt and angry hearts out without compromise to any agent, label, or music exec. They weren’t going to bite on gay country no matter what we said. The door was slammed shut for years for gay country, but we didn’t care. We were pissed off, so we made our statement.
Life Goes On — Forty Long Years

After a few years of touring and gigs at LGBTQ benefits, festivals and other events, the band disbanded; the album was forgotten for decades. I put my hurt in a box and walked into the rest of my life. So what, big deal. Lots of artists, and especially country music performers, are never recognized and remained unsung, especially those who had political messages to share. I told myself to quit belly aching.

I had a life, I raised two children with wonderful mothers. I joined a couple of socialist organizations, engaged in the Seattle radical political scene, ran for office, got sick and got well again. I married into a huge Black family from Philly, and started singing to elders and Alzheimer’s patients. I had a big, interesting, active, wonderful life without Lavender Country and I was fine with it.

Rediscovering Lavender Country — 1999

Lavender Country died without any fanfare… with two notable exceptions. The first was an article written by Chris Dickinson, then Editor of the Journal of Country Music, a publication with a national mainstream audience. She wrote a feature about the history of LGBTQ folks in country music, in which she proclaimed Lavender Country the first gay country album. Because of that publicity, the album was archived in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999. Suspiciously, she was fired months later without explanation. A few years later, Country Music Television’s documentary, Forty Greatest Firsts in Country Music (2005) included Lavender Country, but it was still too early; the dream of Lavender Country remained unrealized.
The Revival of Lavender Country – 2014

I didn’t know it at the time, but someone, still unknown, put one of Lavender Country’s anthems, Cryin’ These Cocksuckin’ Tears, on YouTube. Jeremy Cargill, a music aficionado, heard it, went to eBay and bought a used vinyl LP. When he realized what it was, he took it to a North Carolina independent label, Paradise of Bachelors. Still I knew nothing at this point. Then one day, Brendan Greaves called me and offered a reissue contract. It wasn’t long after our re-release that Lavender Country caught fire. Since 2014, there have been shows in LA, Missoula, Kansas City, St. Louis, Seattle, Ames, Bloomington, Nashville, and Raleigh to name a few. Great reviews led to write-ups, radio interviews, and prize-winning documentaries. Now there are even rumors of a feature length movie. Lavender Country is reborn and has roared back to life with a vengeance.

Los Angeles-based chanteuse/songwriter Jessica Fichot is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that’s truly international. Drawing from her multi-ethnic French / Chinese / American upbringing, her music takes the listener on a twisting journey out of the French chanson tradition, into the land of 1940’s Shanghai jazz, gypsy swing, international folk, and into the wilderness of her imagination.

 

With 3 acclaimed albums under her belt, Jessica has charmed audiences around the world – performing her lively songs at concert halls, festivals and clubs in China, Mexico, Canada and across the US and western Europe. Featuring scorching performances from her bandmates on clarinet/sax, upright bass and guitar, as well as her own beautiful, clear vocals in French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and English, Fichot’s music is truly a dazzling trans-world journey.

Fichot is also an active composer, who has written hundreds of children’s songs for various educational programs, as well as music for many independent video games. She is currently working on a new album, slated for an early 2020 release.

Earles of Newtown is a powerhouse Americana band crafting their tight arrangements of infectious original music around early era Harlem, New Orleans, and “Hot” Jazz, along with Texas and Western Swing, creating a sound all it’s own called simply: “Swingin’ Dixie.” The nine-piece band has been shaking dance floors all over California, including recent gigs in San Francisco. The Earles are injecting energy into the swing scene in the Sacramento, Sonoma, and Petaluma areas, playing along with other excellent North Bay groups such as The Crux and Royal Jelly Jive. Earles of Newtown received the “Best Live Band of 2014 Award” from the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce in Northern California. Notable performances include opening for Dr. John and Allen Toussaint as well as March Fourth Marching Band. Recently mentioned in the Sacramento Bee, “Three to See,” as “one of the gems of the gold country music scene, jazz collective Earles of Newtown peddles perfectly junky juke joint jazz – the kind you’d find in hidden back alley clubs in New Orleans that still require a password and sling a mean mint julep.”
