Ha’ Penny Bridge

2021 LINEUP

Ha’ Penny Bridge

GENRE: California Celtic | LOC: Chico, CA

Ha’Penny Bridge is a Northern California Celtic music band comprised of several musicians from the Chico, California area. Its dynamic, vocal-driven sound has been described aptly as “California Celtic” due to the band’s unique repertoire and arrangements of Mark McKinnon’s original songs, its stirring adaptations of classic and contemporary Celtic-style ballads, and creative infusion of traditional Irish and Scottish tunes.

During its thirteen-year existence, Ha’Penny Bridge has garnered a reputation as one of Northern California’s strongest and most exciting Celtic music bands, including one of the Chico area’s most popular bands. At the very beginning of its existence, the Chico News and Review praised it as one of Chico’s hottest up-and-coming bands, and during its successful appearances at the prestigious KVMR Celtic Festival in Grass Valley in 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016 Ha’Penny Bridge was hailed for its “rapid rise as one of the North State’s most popular bands” that has “garnered a large and enthusiastic following of music lovers of all ages drawn to the group’s powerful, ensemble-style playing and ringing vocal harmonies.” Since 2009, the band has also been a perennial nominee for a Chico Cammie Award as Chico’s best world music band, performing (to rousing standing ovations) at acclaimed Chico World Festivals, headlining Sacramento’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, and Feather Falls Casino’s St. Patrick’s Day Grand Opening celebration, and, among its many other performance venues in Northern California, was honored to open for esteemed Irish artists Karan Casey and John Doyle at Sierra Nevada Brewery’s Big Room .

Making Movies

2021 LINEUP

Making Movies

GENRE: Cumbia/Rock | LOC: Kansas City, MO

Energy, mysticism, roots– it’s hard to describe the genre-breaking music of Making Movies, a band that Rolling Stone says is “breaking down walls in the United States,” with a mix of afro-latino rhythms and psychedelic rock’n’roll that makes the group’s sound something unique. The connection between the Chi brothers (hailing from Santiago, Panama)– together with their Mexican bandmates, the Chaurand brothers– results in an overwhelming musical presence that takes you through landscapes festive, furious, refreshing, and dark.

At times the falsetto of Diego Chi (bassist) takes you to the underworld, while the fuzz of Enrique Chi’s guitar anchors his spirited voice in the midst of the Chaurand brothers’ primal and folkloric percussion. An explosion of energy on the stage––does the soundtrack make the movie, or does the movie make for the soundtrack?

Coreyah

2021 LINEUP

Coreyah 고래야

GENRE: Korean Folk Rock | LOC: South Korea

“Mesmerising and wonderful” ★★★★★ Broadway Baby

“Infectious…a beautifully layered sound” ★★★★ ThreeWeeks

“Beyond the musicians’ sizzling chops, what’s most interesting about this band is how subtly they weave classic Korean folk themes into a rock framework.” (New York Music Daily)

There are few band across the world that so expertly meld classic, traditional instruments and vocalization with entirely modern ones as Coreyah. Indeed, their new breed of music breaks the barrier between the traditional and the contemporary. This sextet group Coreyah’s unique freewheeling, polystylistic vision of Korean traditional music combines various world music heritages, such as Anglo-American rock, Balkan gypsy, and a variety of musical genres from South America and Africa.

The band is chocked full of gifted musicians, consisting of Kim Dongkun (daegeum, sogeum, tungso), Ham Boyoung (vocal), Na Sunjin (geomungo), Kim Chorong (percussion), Kyungyi (percussion) and Ko Jaehyeo (guitar). Since their 2010 debut, Coreyah has been expanding its musical domain by actively blurring the distinction between old and new. In 2011, they won the grand prize at a new Korean music competition called “Cheonchamanbyeol (all kinds of music) Concert” hosted by BukchonChangwoo Theater, and were selected for “Tune Up,” an esteemed granting program. The following year, Coreyah proved that traditional Korean music could attract just as much attention as flashy rock, when they reached the top 16 on KBS (Korean Broadcasting System)’s “Top Band II,” a band survival show. They then went on a four European country-tour, and in 2013, Coreyah received the highest mark at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. They continue to delight audiences at home and abroad.

The name of the group, the Sino-Korean homonym Co – Re – Yah, refers to inheritance of the past, but now serves to draw living modern people toward more attractive music using old music elements. Translated into Hangul, (the Korean alphabet), Coreyah also means “whale”—the group’s totem animal and good luck charm.

Find Your Voice: Opening the Throat Chakra with Katy Avila

Find Your Voice: Opening the Throat Chakra with Katy AvilaFind Your Voice: Opening the Throat Chakra with Katy Avila

Many different practices, from shamanism to Jungian psychology, recognize the practice of automatic writing, or writing without thinking, as a natural, meditative process in which words rise from a subconscious or spiritual source.

Though many people dislike writing or think they don’t know how to write, the inability to automatically write actually suggests psychic blocks and imbalances in the throat chakra as there is a lack of ability to communicate and express oneself.

In this workshop, attendees will participate in a series of group meditation, chanting, and prompted/unprompted writing exercises. The purpose of these exercises is to open up our throat chakra and see what organically arises from within when we put our pen to paper and enter that flow state.

Katy Avila is a writer, mentor, teacher, singer and musician living in Oakland, CA. Katy has taught writing to children, adults, and professionals across various academic and community settings because she believes all humans are writers by nature. By engaging with the power of stories and words, Katy’s workshops create space for change–change in how we view ourselves, each other, the world–and space for personal, collective and cultural healing. Her interests in yoga, music, and spirituality intersect with her teaching experience to create a transformative writing approach that is embodied, meditative, and cathartic.
